Fusionex Powers MATRADE's #MyAPEC2020 Virtual Exhibition Platform

In September 2020, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation ran its #MyAPEC2020 programme on a virtual exhibition platform delivered by Fusionex. Malaysia was hosting APEC that year, and the hosting duties arrived in the middle of a global shutdown of physical trade events.

A hosting year with no venue

APEC hosting is a substantial diplomatic and commercial exercise. For a trade promotion agency, the value lies in the exhibition programme surrounding it, where domestic exporters meet buyers from across the Asia Pacific region. That programme is the point at which national trade policy becomes actual purchase orders for individual companies.

In 2020 none of it could take place in a hall. The choice was to cancel the commercial programme, reduce it to a series of unstructured video calls, or rebuild it as software within months.

What the platform had to do

A virtual exhibition for a national trade agency carries requirements that a general purpose conferencing tool does not meet. Exhibitor profiles must be structured well enough for buyers to filter by product category and certification. Meeting scheduling has to work across a wide span of time zones. The platform has to remain usable for a small manufacturer with limited bandwidth and no dedicated marketing team.

Above all it has to produce records. A trade agency reports to government on outcomes, which means it needs evidence of participation, engagement and resulting business interest, not an anecdotal impression that the event went well.

Why the delivery mattered beyond the event

The project is one of the clearest demonstrations in this archive of platform work under real time pressure. The delivery window was short, the client was a government agency with reporting obligations, and the participants were exporters whose commercial year depended on the outcome.

It also marked a shift in what trade promotion agencies expected from digital tools. Before 2020, a virtual component was a supplementary channel bolted onto a physical event. After 2020, agencies across the region began treating the digital venue as permanent infrastructure that continues operating between events.

Where it sits in the record

The MATRADE platform belongs to a cluster of 2020 projects delivered while ordinary commercial life was suspended, alongside the Nationwide customer experience project and the virtual fitness platform. Taken together they show a company redeploying the same analytics and platform engineering across three completely different problems inside a single year.
